Take a pew

My pew arrived today, courtesy of my friend Tracey and her van. I spent some time yesterday reshuffling the kitchen and making a big space for the pew to land. I still wasn't sure if it would look right, but now it is in place, I am really pleased with it.

A perch on which to sit and chat to the cook....

The pew is just a simple pitch pine, smoothed by the passage of time, and my Dad, who made all sorts of little adjustments for me. I loved the chance to rejig the house, cleaning is always much more satisfying when you're doing it with a good reason. I also went into my shed and retrieved a small book shelf, which I think was made by my late uncle in his woodworking class at school. Cleaned it and waxed it, and then sorted out all my recipe books to display.

My eldest son looked askance at the jug of daffodils. "Now Mum, that's not very practical...." I have assured him that the daffs are for one day only....

  1. Your pew looks lovely, just imagine all the little bums that have sat on it over years, adds to the charm doesn't it? I love your signs too, Lucey x

    1. Hi Lucey, yes I love its history, and the fact that I probably will have known lots of the people who sat there (except the Victorians, I'm not that old :))

  2. Your pew looks beautiful against the black and white floor - I bet it seems like it's been there forever already. I've also got one of those bookshelves - with some of my recipe books in it! I bet whoever made it in the first place had no idea it would become such a covetable item! x Jane

  5. It looks lovely, but isn't it a shame they are being removed from the churches, they might be a bit uncomfortable to sit on.....we should start a campaign and make lovely vintage cushions for people's bottoms to perch on! Love your dress too! ;) x

    1. Hi Ada, yes I do agree that it's a great shame that they are being removed, but I'd rather that if the church is then used as a lively community meeting place. They are retaining the central pews, it's just the smaller ones around the sides that are going.
A More Comfortable Pew campaign is a fine idea :)

    1. I'm relieved, as I am a bit impulsive and I put my name on this before I'd done the measurements! That's it now, though, my house is officially full...

    1. How true! It's a plain little pew, but I had to have the very smallest one, and I think it's sweet. There are some wonky bits, where it has been chopped about to fit into an awkward space in the church, but I quite like that.

  9. ~ Its wonderful and lovely that you have given it another life , with you!....I loved your dress earlier post and hope you don't mind, but have treated my self also! Just fell in 'love' with the vintage style too! We just need some warm weather to pop on those sandals and cardigans! With kind thoughts...Maria x

    1. Hi Maria, I am really pleased you liked the dress, and that you bought one too! I love it when people put clothes they've bought on their blogs, and I have also been tempted when I've seen something nice :)
