A nest
I was clearing space at the end of the garden today where it's totally overgrown with nettles, sticky grass, dried cow parsley and weeds. As I was pulling some ivy from a tree, I spotted this nest tucked inside a fork in the branches. I checked thoroughly to make sure it was old, and it had quite a lot of debris inside, so I was satisfied that it was probably a last year's nest. I slid it out of the tree and photographed it in the late evening sun. I love the shadow of the nest, showing all its intricate threads. I've made it my header photo now. Such a beautiful thing, a nest.

It's beautiful, I found one recently but it wouldn't budge! it seemed to be glued into the tree hollow
ReplyDeleteI came back a few weeks later and found the tree had a bees nest - just as well I didn't move it!
Isn't it interesting how all these tiny little pieces are woven together with a beak, no hands!
Exactly, and there seem to be lots of techniques involved. Some looks woven, and then mud has been used to stick it together, and it's lined with softer grass. And as you say, it's wedged in so firmly.
DeleteIt really is a beautiful part of nature and makes a wonderful header.
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteBeautiful... Love the shadow effect.

What a lovely photo and it makes a beautiful header. Nests are little engineering feats aren't they!
ReplyDeleteLovely new header I love the birds, we have had baby robins and baby blackbirds on our table this weekend, I love watching how they demand from the parents when they are on the table with the food, x
ReplyDeleteYes, I was watching my father-in-law's bird table today and there were so many different birds on there, and you're right, those babies are very demanding!
DeleteThat makes the prettiest header especially in the weather we've been having (mind you it's torrential rain thunder and lightening at the moment hah!)
ReplyDeleteHi, yes, the weather has turned with a vengeance. But we've had a good summer so far. Thanks for comments :) I've always wanted to find a nest to photograph!
DeleteOne of the wonders of nature. How pretty the birds nest is!
ReplyDeleteHave a pleasant evening!

Hi Madelief, it is a wonder of nature, exactly right.
DeleteI love the shadow the nest creates, I also think the beauty for me is wrapped up in the creation of this beautiful item. The raising of the family, the cosy feeling of home, the empty nest......so many heart strings, so much beauty.
ReplyDeleteLove it in your simple and beautiful header.
Hugs Lynn xx
Thank you Lynn, you've expressed it perfectly.
