The first boot of spring

A great forecast was predicted, so my eldest son and I set our alarms for the first car boot sale of the season. We had to scrape frost from the car windscreen, but the sun was showing through at 7am. There weren't many hardy car boots at the field, but we had a very pleasant mooch, and I re-met some stallholder friends from past years.
My son found a stash of 1960s Pelican books, so I bought a few of those. I like the colours and typefaces.

My son bought a lovely old edition of a John Steinbeck novel and also a nice copy of Breakfast at Tiffanys. He wants to study American literature at uni, so he's stockpiling some classics.
We were just leaving, and I must admit I was feeling slightly disappointed by my small haul, when I saw this hanging on a van door:

A lovely washed and faded linen Brora dress. I snapped it up for £4 and it's now hanging on the washing line in the sun. Haven't actually tried it on yet, I hardly dare incase it is too small, but my fingers are crossed.
P.S It does fit! Very happy. I can't eat any biscuits for the next year now, but that's fine :)

* I love my copy of a book called The English Village. I'll be watching the BBC serial The Village tonight, too, although I did find the first episode very depressing. I loved The Great British Sewing Bee, however. Although I don't like the way that TV turns everything into a competition, I just like seeing people creating things, and I have a major crush on the 81 year old Anne, with her amazing sewing skills and stylish wardrobe.

  1. What lovely finds... I don't understand why the sewing bee has to be a contest but I'm hoping that Anne wins .. Sarah x

  2. Dear Streetcomber
Great finds. I really enjoyed the Sewing Bee, but do agree that it didn't need to be a competition (although perhaps just watching people making things might not have got the go ahead for the programme makers). At least they are all making their own things from start to finish and not just starting something, having a go and leaving it to an expert to finish (yes, I mean you, Kirsty Allsopp - ooh, controversial, Ellie!)
I am really looking forward to next week's Sewing Bee and I would love Anne to make me some clothes! To quote Brucie, "Anne, you're my favourite"!
    Best wishes

    1. I do agree about Kirstie, I like her, but not the fakey makey that goes on in her shows...

  3. I've been busy doing Charity Shopping this weekend. Got a nice lined picnic basket and four beautiful blue cups and saucers. I felt almost virtuous buying them. RE: the Sewing Bee, Anne is fabulous, especially hanging up-side-down in her yoga sling. She is inspirational in every way! : ) I hope your dress fits. Please, let us know.

    1. Hi Debs
The yoga sling was impressive and she does look incredibly well on it.
As updated above, my lovely dress does fit, it's snug, but it fits.

    2. I meant to say, before I typed it all wrong, Brenda is lovely, too. And I admire the steam punk man who says he sits and watches TV with his wife in the evenings while they are both on their sewing machines!

  5. Best of luck with the dress, you have made me envious. I have withdrawal symptoms, I need to get to a car boot now.

  7. Would have chosen the same books - I bought two from Lewes recently but they are getting harder to find and your dress was a lovely purchase. I thought the Sewing Bee was very interesting. I love sewing but dressmaking has always seemed rather boring to me. The talent of those people is impressive though and I am quite jealous of their skills. Karen xx

    1. Yes, dress making is certainly methodical, I think I am too impatient. I also think it is quite mathematical, which instantly puts me at a disadvantage! Thanks for the book appreciation, too.

  9. I love Anne too - the gorgeous, yet simple, transformation of the white top! Couldn't help feeling on edge during the programme, not sure why. Well done you with the Brora find x
