Rise and fall light

Lighting: always a tricky issue in a house. I don't think we've got it right at all, but I've finally got a rise-and-fall light installed over the kitchen table. We'd had the same low hanging shade for years, and it always seemed to be in the way, shining in our eyes, or hitting us on the head, and it was driving me crazy when I was sewing. We were well overdue in getting an adjustable one. This is the Brigitta light from John Lewis, in cream metal with a simple fabric cord. It has a pulley at the top, so you can adjust the height to suit the task: eating, sewing, homework etc.

I've been cutting back in the garden and I rescued these buds, hoping they might open in the warmth. I quite like them as they are though.

Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you Josie! The quilt is now quilted, and I am just waiting for my next lesson in attaching the backing. It's getting exciting...The kitchen definitely looks better at a distance. It's a cheap Ikea one, and the black and white flooring was also very inexpensive, it looks like lino, but it was just a roll of flooring, which has been absolutely brilliant and hard wearing.

  5. Love you kitchen, very stylish. I had a ceramic rise and fall light in bright orange that I loved but it got smashed when moving house.

  6. I think your kitchen looks lovely and like your old bench as a divider between eating and cooking. Have serious envy of your green glass too. Hope your weekend was good. The sun actually appeared down here in Sussex and we walked along the prom and the boys had ice creams. xx

    1. HI Karen, I bought that old pew on impulse because it was in the church in the village where I grew up, then had nervous moments thinking it wouldn't fit in the house, but so pleased with it now. I'm glad you saw the sun, we went to visit Jack in Manchester on Saturday, it was cloudy but didn't rain, and we had a lovely day with him exploring the city (which is massive, so much more to see!).

  7. Your new light is beautiful. I love that Elastoplasty colour!
You may remember I had a rise and fall light over my kitchen table, weighted with a pretty ceramic acorn filled with tiny lead pellets. (This one: http://www.originalbtc.com/catalogue_item.php?catID=5520&prodID=38459)
I had friends round for dinner one night, not long after redecorating, and the whole thing crashed abruptly down. Glass and china shards all over, abrupt darkness and general bewilderment. No one was hurt, but my boyfriend´s glasses were scratched. I don´t think it had been put back properly after decorating.
I ordered a new ácorn´from BTC. It was much cheaper without the filling, so I spent hours retrieving every last pellet from kitchen crannies.
It´s all safely reinstalled now and I´m glad my 15-year-old classic has survived. But definitely worth noting that these lights need to be screwed in very firmly!

    1. Hi Ruth, that is a cautionary tale, to be sure. An electrician installed this, so hopefully it's okay. Also, it is metal, so much lighter than the ceramic kind (I couldn't afford the BTC ones, although I did look at them for a long time).
Thanks for you lovely email too. xx
