Scribbles, doodles - and plans

                           Green dresser

Well, I have been loving the warm weather, but last night was totally tropical. I knew I wouldn't sleep if I went to bed, so I stayed up and did some drawing and painting. It's so lovely and so rare to have a long, unbroken spell of time - I wouldn't say it was peaceful as my son and his friends were carousing in the garden prior to going out -  but I could just sit and try a few things out. These are just little sketches. I recently treated myself to two new tiny watercolour blocks and a tube of vivid orange, so I was having a play around with those as well (watercolour paints are eye-wateringly expensive, even though they do last for ever, so I don't often buy new colours).

I did this one of some of my button jars and cotton reels.

I love satchels. I have an old brown leather one like this. And below is a picture of some redcurrants. I don't think this really worked, but I quite like the colours, and the redcurrants were so pretty I had to at least attempt them. An artist I admire is Mary Fedden, who often painted domestic scenes and still lifes. They are stunning. I love the way she plays with perspective, so you can see inside the bowls and jugs that she paints. That's what I was trying to do. It didn't work but you have to try!

My trusty paint box. I've had it for many years and it has travelled to all sorts of places with me. The little china palette came from an antiques fair, and it's really useful as I do a lot of mixing and blending.

I'm thinking now that I will turn a few of these into cards, but I just need to get a few more that I am really happy with before I choose. It's exciting to have a small project on the go....

  2. I love your bright, clear colours. I've tried watercolours a few times and find it's very easy to make 'mud'. : )

    1. Yes, you are right, it is! That's why I have two mixing palettes. I find the background colours are the most difficult to steer away from muddiness.

    1. Ah thank you, that is very kind. I wish I could sew and knit! I did A level art and now it's something I come back to time and again.
